Point of view

2016
Curating at Kunsthalle Charlotteborg
in Manifolds festival, Copenhagen (DK)

Point of view with Christian Aschman, Sebastien Bonin, Valérian Goalec, Adrien Vescovi at Kunsthal Charlottenborg, Copenhagen (DK) April 23th - May 5, 2016 Four artists published by Théophile’s Papers, Christian Aschman, Sébastien Bonin, Valérian Goalec and Adrien Vescovi, will present at Kunsthal Charlottenborg a series of works built in conversation with their own publications, wether already published or still in the works. Weaving a thread of tight links around this elusive and hybrid medium, photographs and volumes are here developing as au- tonomous space units and open a meditation around the reflective possibilities of the book. This exhibition is part of Manifolds and is curated by Lodret Vandret during One Thousand Books text : Emilie Lauriola Point of view (as part of Manifolds) during One Thousand Books festival by Lodret Vandret

Repetition leads to the formation of productive cycles, effects seep out from bottom to top, the image reacts with itself and creates itself. If the cross is the skeleton of the image, the process of reproduction is some kind of Skeleton Dance, where the parts themselves serve as tools for the production of new configurations ( … )

( … ) When I watch your photographic production in metropoles and capitals of the world for almost twenty years, I can’t call it architecture photography, even though architecture photography is the substance or the matter of it. I also have the feeling that these simple forms which you’ve been photographing for a long time can’t run out, that in their simplicity, they open up a multiplicity of gazes in a temporal continuum. Reversal film is a particular photographic genre. Photography is not used to reveal its technical origin. «An image in the era of its industrial reproduction», it restricts its negative, its matrix, in the dark room’s obscurity of the montage desk, of the development laboratory. Just as cinema, photography only exists in the second state of the photo print on media of diverse quality and format, be it in the form of copies, rushes, or versions

Theophile’s Papers an exhibition

2015
curating at Rosa Brux
Brussels (BE)

For this exhibition at Rosa Brux, Théophile’s Papers presents works from artists Christian Aschman, Baptiste Caccia, Sébastien Capouet and Mathieu Gargam. Each artist uses their personal publication as a starting point to formulate a contribution to the exhibition, all closely tied to an understanding of the book as an object. Together, the works generate a spectrum of new reading possibilities.

«I often use systems and protocols in my work. But those videos are on the contrary rather free. I liked the idea that I could lose control of certain choices. The book gives the opportunity to work with other people, to materialise researchs or reflexions and to bring about new ones. As you say, it works as a starting point.»

Sébastien Bonin’s recent work belongs to this movement. Although in the past he has turned his camera to the great landscapes of the American West or to the trivial details of his urban environment, since 2013 the artist has been experimenting with the photogram technique – considered to be the forerunner of photography – to produce non-figurative photos.

Sébastien Capouet’s Palimpsest gathers a body of photographs taken between 2011 and 2014, in parallel with the artist’s pictorial practice. This object-book induces, via playful folds and successive intervals, rhythmic gestures in the reader. Within Sébastien Capouet’s oeuvre, the body of photographic images presents itself as a transitory, liminal space, as a condition for the abstraction of the painted canvas. The chosen abstraction allows the artist to concentrate the attention of the spectator on the processes at play.

Hobbs McLaughlin is a continuation of Marie Angeletti’s 2013 exhibition, inside the living room of a Balfron Tower apartment, a Goldfinger high rise in East London. The publication sees Angeletti further develop a web of relationships, part-real part-fictional, centred around the flat and people involved in it. For this publication, Angeletti mixes installation shots and images from the show, photographs from the opening night and works by artist-friends who have also exhibited in the flat.
